Our Founder’s Skincare Routine Evaluated by a Doctor

One of the reasons I founded Shiblaqbri was my passion for skincare. As someone with oily, acne-prone skin, it can be difficult to keep up with the changing seasons and the different solutions offered to remove dark spots, reduce oil production, and provide the ultimate radiant glow. In fact, when multiple brands are combined, many of these products do more harm than good.

I used to spend the most time on my skincare routine. When I consider all of the skincare mistakes I've made over the years, I'm surprised my skin barrier wasn't worse off. From the ten-step skincare routine craze to over-exfoliating, the internet is littered with unsubstantiated advice and recommendations. I, too, have been duped into believing that I needed a slew of things to achieve the best results. When it comes to skincare, the truth is that results take time, and simplicity is the best course of action.

My skincare routine has lapsed in recent months, owing primarily to stress. If you're a subscriber to our newsletter, you'll know that I lost my mother this summer, so skincare wasn't my first concern. And that's fine. Sometimes the most important thing is just getting through the day or remembering to eat even when you don't feel hungry. It is difficult to deal with loss while also taking care of oneself.

One of the things I had to put on hold was my skin and hair care, and now I'm attempting to make up for the months of neglect. As someone who values research when giving skincare product recommendations, I opted to have a professional assess my skincare routine.

My current skincare routine consists of the following:

La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser (daytime)

La Roche-Posay Purifying Foaming Cleanser (nighttime)

Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid + B5 Serum

Dermalogica Daily Microexfoilant (2–3 times a week)

Cocokind Texture Smoothing Cream

Blackgirl Sunscreen: Make it Matte SPF 45

Dr. Rosmy Barrios, MD, a Health Reporter medical expert, weighed in on my current skincare regimen. “When creating an effective skincare regimen for people with oily, acne-prone skin, it's critical to strike a fine balance between addressing specific skin conditions and avoiding overproducing. Let's have a look at your skincare routine:

The La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser for the day and the Purifying Foaming Cleanser for the night are both appropriate selections. They can effectively remove excess oil, grime, and makeup without leaving the skin overly dry.

Following that, incorporating serums into the routine is a wonderful move. The Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum is essential for restoring and strengthening the skin's protective barrier, which is frequently weakened in acne-prone skin. Similarly, the Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid + B5 Serum hydrates without exacerbated oiliness.

Exfoliation, done 2-3 times per week with the Dermalogica Daily Microexfoliant, aids in the removal of dead skin cells and helps avoid clogged pores. However, it's critical to keep an eye out for signs of over-exfoliation, such as redness or increased sensitivity.

The choice of the Cocokind Texture Smoothing Cream as a moisturizer is commendable, as it provides necessary hydration without making the skin feel excessively oily. Finally, sun protection is essential for all skin types. Make it Matte Blackgirl sunscreen SPF 45 is a good choice because it provides sun protection without leaving a thick or greasy residue.

Individualized evaluation is required to determine whether all of these goods and actions are required. Some people may require a more intensive skincare program, but others may get sufficient results with a more straightforward method.

To establish an effective skincare routine for oily, acne-prone skin, personalized assessment is paramount, considering each individual's unique skin concerns, sensitivity levels, and skincare goals. Seeking guidance from a dermatologist is highly advised, especially for those dealing with severe or persistent acne. Consistency in adhering to the chosen skincare regimen for several weeks is vital to evaluating its efficacy fully. Carefully monitor the skin's response, watching for signs of excessive dryness, irritation, or exacerbated acne, and be prepared to make necessary adjustments accordingly.

In cases of severe or persistent acne, dermatologists may recommend prescription medications or targeted treatments as additional interventions to manage the condition effectively. Additionally, it's important to recognize the role of lifestyle factors, such as diet and stress management, in influencing overall skin health, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to skincare.”

By sticking to a strict regimen over the last few weeks, I've not only restored the health and vibrancy of my skin, but I've also gotten a better appreciation of the power of consistency. I've learned that consistency is the key to obtaining long-term and spectacular results. It also has an impact on your mental wellness. What do you do to get your skincare back on track?
