Perfect Makeup Mistakes I’ve Made

I have always admired those who could do make-up. Being a make-up artist is challenging, and can come with a lot of critique in the beauty industry. However, the rewards for the work put in seem to push artists to keep creating more products, more videos, and encourages others to follow in their footsteps.

Every artist has started off like everyone else. A little one lost and confused on where to start. Practice makes perfect, and the only way to get better is to keep trying at it.I learned how to do makeup through YouTube, as I'm sure most of us have learned a thing or two from the infamous site. While going through the challenges of learning how to apply make-up, and what NOT to do, I have made some very big mistakes. Even to this day I make mistakes, I mean I'm sure even make-up artists do, no one is perfect. So I'm going to share ten mistakes I've made throughout the 24 years I've been on this earth when it has come to makeup.

Pencil Eyeliner

Although tons of people line their bottom lash line, I have learned not to line it all the way into the inner tear duct. First of all, it makes my eyes look smaller, and second, it just bleeds all over the place anyway. Instead, I have learned to just drag some eyeshadow under my lower lashes to intensify and glam my look. When it comes to lining my top lid with pencil liner it is helpful if I need it for an outline, however, I don't anymore. If I do use liner on my top lid, I have learned to ONLY use waterproof.

Mascara

Can anyone say waterproof? I mean at the number of times I cry from laughing too hard it is a must. Anything else is unacceptable. Also, I tend to go to the gym in the middle of the day and I'd rather not get mascara in my eye.

**No I do not go to the gym with a full face of makeup, sometimes I wear mascara and fill in my brows to make me look awake**

Filling in Eyebrows

Eyebrows are, arguably, the most important part of your face. They can make or break your look. Whether or not you're wearing makeup they are important. They are the definition of expression. Okay...I may be a little dramatic, but I pride myself on my eyebrows. So I have learned that I should follow my natural eyebrows as they exist, and stop trying to make them twins. Also, filling in my brows too dark is a no go. Just-I needed to stop. Thank you, Sephora for helping me.

Lipstick

There's this stereotype that black women can't wear certain colors of lipstick. Personally, I used to think this myself until I came across a video by Auntie Jackie (Jackie Aina for my peeps not down with the culture) explaining all the ways black women can SLAY any colored lipstick with the right lip liner.

And thanks to the Glamtwinz I can confidently layer lipsticks and glosses to create my own shade.

Foundation

The biggest mistake I would make with foundation was matching it to my chest instead of my jaw. And now I know better. If you didn't know then now you know better sis, you're welcome.

Concealer

There was a point where I didn't believe in concealer because I didn't think I needed it. Of course, this was when I had near perfect skin with a perfect complexion. And now I realize that concealer can be used for more than just covering dark spots. Highlight them features boo!

Setting Powder vs Setting Spray

I used to never use setting powder, and last year when I tried it for the first time I fell in love. I had no idea what I was missing, and how in combination with my setting spray, it really enhanced my look.

Blending

I have gotten better at blending, and thank god because streaky foundation ain't cute sis! I have mastered the technique of blending with a brush and sponge. I'm very proud of myself.

Dirty Makeup Brushes/Sponges

Using dirty brushes/sponges is just asking for acne. Who asks for that? People who don't wash their brushes.

Sunscreen

Honestly, I have always been a promotor for sunscreen. However, I thought with foundation on I didn't need it on my face which is WRONG. You either need a moisturizer with SPF, or foundation with SPF. Something cause honey, just because we are black does not mean we are safe. The sun does not discriminate, Okay?
