What’s up with Tatcha? Product Review

In April, I decided to use 100 of my points on sephora.com to try some products by Tatcha. Tatcha is a skincare brand founded by Victoria Tsai. This brand is said to have been inspired by ancient Japanese beauty practices. Tatcha has been raved about by many of my close friends, but I had yet to try the products out myself.

With my points I acquired, The Deep Cleanse and The Water Cream. The Deep Cleanse retails for $38 for 150ml, and the Water Cream retails for $68 for 50ml. Tatcha is considered a clean brand by Sephora standards meaning that it is formulated without ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates.

As I stated, I did not purchase these items but acquired the samples with the points I've earned through Sephora's point system. When I shop for skincare items I don't just consider the price, but I also think about what it does and if it works for my skin.

Disclaimer: I am not a dermatologist or an esthetician. If you are seeking advice about skincare issues that require medical attention I encourage you to see a professional.

The Deep Cleanse

The first thing I want to talk about is the packaging. This cleanser is in a long cylinder bottle that does not come with a pump. The bottle is quite hard to squeeze the product out of after a while. I had to flip the bottle upside down to make sure I was getting all of the product and not leaving any inside before I recycle it. From the look of the full-sized product on tatcha's website, it seems to be the same as the sample size I received. The sample size is about 25 ml and has lasted me quite a while in terms of uses.

As mentioned earlier, I got this product on my birthday and I used it morning and night for two weeks. I still have some leftover as I'm writing this review. The cleanser being $38 doesn't sound so bad especially since I'd be getting 150ml. The texture of this product is very gentle. The description for this cleanser is a clarifying Japanese Luffa fruit extract for normal to oily skin.

Out of both products I got to try this one is my favorite. Not only was this cleanser incredibly moisturizing, but the texture is like silk. This is a luxury item and I would purchase the full-sized product if I had extra room in my budget.

Pros

  • Gentle enough for sensitive skin and everyday use

  • Doesn't strip the skin

  • Smells good

Cons

  • Price is steep, retails for $38

  • Product packaging makes it hard for you to squeeze out the product when it's nearing its end

  • Can be a no go for those sensitive to smell

The Water Cream

This Water Cream was the one that I was most excited to try mostly because of all the raving reviews that I heard about it. This cream is quite moisturizing and made my face feel like it was floating on clouds the first time I used it. However, I don't think that it is worth paying the steep steep price of $68 especially if you don't have that kind of money to spend. But if you do you might just fall in love with it and hurt your wallet so be careful.

This cream is moisturizing without being heavy and helps the appearance of pores on your face seem smaller. The sample I got had 10ml of product in it and as you can imagine lasted me barely a week. The packaging is cute, but there is not enough of it to justify spending almost seventy bucks.

Pros

  • Pore minimizing

  • Smells good

  • Moisturizing enough for normal skin

Cons

  • A small amount of product for $68 (only 50ml)

  • Not hydrating enough for dehydrated skin

  • This product will need to be used sparingly especially if you are heavy-handed

I think adopting a skincare philosophy where less is more can be beneficial to everyone especially those with sensitive skin. I praise Tatcha for its quality ingredients and texture of the products I've tried so far. It does make me want to try more. Have you ever tried this brand? What are your thoughts?
