The Fall Basics You Need

Disclaimer: You don’t actually need anything in your closet that doesn’t fit your personal style. Shopping consciously and with intention will always be the best method. I am constantly evolving in my personal style, but having quality basics helps me shop less and value my clothes more. This post is not meant to encourage you to shop. But it can help if you have a hard time matching items in your closet.

I have been building a wardrobe slowly but surely since the year started. To be more intentional with my spending and what I purchase, I have been selling/donating my clothes while purchasing more quality clothing. I have been trying to buy second hand to reduce the number of clothes I buy new. However, sometimes you have no choice. So I’ve been shopping with intention and asking myself the following questions:

  • Is this item’s quality good?

  • How does this item make me feel?

  • Does this item fit me well?

  • How many pieces in my wardrobe can this item be paired with?

  • Will I wear this often?

I started my journey by making a list of items I needed to curate outfits for everyday wear. I started with the basics. Basics for my wardrobe might be different than basics for yours. On my basics list were items I could use for multiple occasions, whether dressy or casual. I also wanted to make sure that the items in my closet were things I could still fit. I have a habit of holding onto old high-school t-shirts. *awkward smile*

For the most part, I tend to be a t-shirt and jeans gal, but there have been times where I wanted to look a bit more dressed up. Knowing that I tend to lean more towards casual-looking clothes helps me make sure that the items I get to curate my new and improved wardrobe are things I will wear.

Mom Jeans

A good pair of well-fitted jeans can go a long way in your fall wardrobe. They don’t necessarily need to be distressed like mine, but they should have some stretch if you are curvy. Jeans can go with any and everything. They definitely go with all the tops on this list. If you want to switch up your look, try tucking in an oversized t-shirt or pair the jeans with a nice long sleeve crop top.

Linen Shirt

Although linen tends to be a summer staple, I think this item can transition into fall well. This can be paired with a skirt, jeans, or even leggings. You can tuck this into your bottoms to give yourself a more polished look.

Nude Pointed Heels

Finding a skin-toned nude is so beneficial for your wardrobe. Nude shoes can be paired with literally anything. Heels, in particular, can make any casual outfit a little more fitting for specific occasions. And no matter what I live for a good heel HONTEA ;)

Wrap Coat

This coat has been in my closet for some time now. This is an excellent staple for weather that may be a little breezy, but you don’t necessarily need a heavy coat.

Scoop Neck Fitted Shirt in Black

Having a neutral-colored top can really elevate your wardrobe and how you can curate outfits. Need I say more?

Blazer

A well-fitted blazer can add spice to your wardrobe, especially if you add it to layer on a basic neutral top. A printed blazer is a fall essential in my particular closet because most of my items are neutral.

Graphic Tee

I am a massive fan of oversized t-shirts. Pairing t-Shirts with a skirt or pair of high-waisted jeans can really elevate an outfit.

Sweater

This amber-colored sweater is one of my favorite pieces in my closet right now. Sweaters are so versatile and, much like everything on this list, can go with anything.

Pleather Skirt

Having a skirt you can wear with anything is definitely crucial for my own personal style. This skirt has been a staple for a long time, no matter the season. This one isn’t real leather, so it doesn’t get too sweaty but still provides that edgy look when I need to pair anything soft with it, like this sweater, for example.

As you can see, having pieces you can fit with anything is essential. You can get the most out of your wardrobe by ensuring your pieces fit nicely together. What’s in your closet?
